The Power of Same

Olympic coach: What’s the difference between the best athletes and everyone else? Genetics, sure. Luck, sure. Talent, sure. BUT At some point it comes down to who can handle the boredom of training every day, doing the same lifts over and over and over.

The power of same is being okay with consistent, boring, mundane, routine things.

The more you practice, the more boring it becomes, the easier it is to mail it in. You get past the beginners throw, and it’s easy to say “that’s good enough” and mail it in. It’s easy to get in a rut in the gym and not challenge your muscles “that’s good enough.”

The beginning is always more exciting. When you got the role, it was exciting. When you got the promotion it was exciting. When you got married, it was exciting.

If you only do it when it’s exciting, you’ll never experience the excitement of remarkable results.

The real results only come when you push through the valley of same. Nothing’s happening. I don’t think it’s working. She’s not as funny as when we dated.

Keep doing the right things consistently.

The power of doing the same old same old day in and day out is what makes the difference between a pro and an amateur.

The compound of same comes later than you want, comes stronger than you thought, and brings more of what you did.

The most important things are typically the most boring and bring results later rather than now.

What are the consistent and boring things? Usually the things that you don’t see the results from immediately.

  • Communicating consistently

  • Encouraging consistently

  • Reading consistently

  • Seeking advice consistently

  • Writing consistently

  • Exercising consistently

  • Listening consistently

  • Relearning consistently
